For over forty years, Dr. John and Dr. Julie Gottman studied couples in extraordinary detail. What they found was that relationship success and failure are not random, not purely a matter of compatibility or chemistry, and not as mysterious as most people assume. There are specific, identifiable patterns that predict whether a relationship will thrive or deteriorate. And those patterns can be changed.
The Gottman Method is built entirely on that research. It gives couples a precise framework for understanding what is actually happening in their relationship, where the real vulnerabilities are, and what concrete changes will make the most difference. It is rigorous, practical, and grounded in evidence rather than intuition.
This doesn’t mean it’s cold or clinical. The Gottman framework encompasses friendship, intimacy, shared meaning, and the full emotional life of a relationship. But it approaches all of that with a level of specificity that most couples find clarifying in a way that more open-ended therapy often isn’t.

The Four Horsemen is the term the Gottmans use for four specific communication patterns that their research identified as the most reliably predictive of relationship breakdown.
They are criticism, attacking your partner’s character rather than raising a specific concern. Defensiveness, responding to a complaint by deflecting or counter-attacking rather than taking any responsibility. Contempt, communicating superiority, disgust, or disrespect toward your partner, which the research identifies as the single most corrosive pattern of all. And stonewalling, shutting down emotionally and withdrawing from interaction entirely. Most couples recognize at least some of these in their own dynamic.
The Gottman Method helps you identify which are present, understand what drives them, and replace them with more effective alternatives.
